Once l got past the limp-wristed cover, l was nothing short of excited to devour the gritty contents so masterfully crafted by Mc Allen. For starters, a short story format is ideal considering our collective hectic adult schedules. The true bonus, of course, is the huge portion of brain candy that the author liberally supplies as the captive reader becomes a fly on the wall witnessing, in some cases, the underbelly of society.McAllen's ability to transport the reader into the character's mind and soul is stupendously rendered, story after story. There wasn't a single offering in this book that disappointed. The mostly urban-based tales will appeal to city slickers and country folk alike, l believe. As a Brooklynite , l felt like l was walking beside the characters in some cases.
Hopefully in his next book McAllen will treat us to more of the morose, sans the faggy cover .

Entertaining read! Very thought provoking. It was easy to see myself in any number of the stories, which made it easy to become absorbed in the tales.
I am enjoying Split Rock Road very much. With each story ending I find myself wanting to know more. Each story transports me right there with the characters.
I highly recommend getting the book. I have it on print and on my kindle.
Great page turn, the writer kept you wanting more. You got so caught up in each of the stories you didn't want them to end. I orginally bought the book, but had to have it on my kindle. Hope there is more to come from McAllen.

Yes, every life and story is relevant. McAllen crafts diverse and colorful characters to populate his gritty New York stories. He delves through layers of humanity exposing the part that connects us all--flawed vulnerability. This author has his hands on the pulse of every character and the reader experiences every beat!
The author has a way of getting into the heart of his reader. The short stories are short but packed to the brim with the human element. There's a fragility to each character that is so real, it felt at times I was reading about parts of my own life. I like that its a book of short stories. For me, each story is to be read, chewed and digested before I moved on to the next. I definitely recommend it, it's a great read and I am looking forward to next book from this author.
This is a GREAT read....I haven't read a book in awhile and find this book not only an easy read but the author has a way of getting into your head. He describes moments in full detail with great metaphors and you can totally picture yourself in every story whether being childhood memories or actual life experiences. I would recommend this book 10 times over and wish for the author to continue every story. I feel that every story in this book can be turned into a full novel and that's exactly what I expect. Some stories are better than others but leave you wanting more. Can't wait for the next writings of Jame McAllen!!!
